The Timeless Charm of the Grünhainichen Angels by Wendt & Kühn
Step into a world of tradition, craftsmanship, and enchantment with the Grünhainichen Angels — beloved icons of German artistry crafted by Wendt & Kühn for over a century.
For over 100 years, the tiny, serene Grünhainichen Angels have brought joy to collectors and families around the world. With their iconic green wings dotted with eleven white polka dots and timeless expressions, these angels are more than mere figurines — they are symbols of peace, beauty, and enduring craftsmanship.
The Birth of a Legacy
The story begins in 1915 in the quaint village of Grünhainichen, nestled in Germany’s Ore Mountains (Erzgebirge), a region famed for its woodcraft traditions. It was here that artist and designer Grete Wendt, along with her business partner Olly Sommer, founded Wendt & Kühn. Trained at the Dresden School of Applied Arts, Grete Wendt brought artistic sophistication and innovative vision to traditional folk art.
In 1923, Wendt introduced the first of what would become the signature Grünhainichen Angels. The design was simple yet poetic — small, hand-painted figures with round faces, rosy cheeks, and expressive gestures, each featuring the now-famous green wings with eleven white dots.
Eleven Dots of Distinction
Those eleven dots are more than decorative — they are a hallmark of authenticity and a tribute to Wendt’s exacting design principles. Each angel is crafted from wood, hand-turned, and individually painted in up to 160 delicate steps, preserving the company’s original design and spirit.
Through the Generations
Surviving wars, political change, and economic shifts, Wendt & Kühn remained true to its heritage even during the years of East German state control. After the reunification of Germany, the family regained ownership, and the brand experienced a global renaissance.
Today, the Grünhainichen Angels have grown into a collection of over 80 angel musicians, each playing a different instrument. New angels are still introduced regularly — always rooted in Grete Wendt’s design language, yet fresh and meaningful for modern times.
More Than a Collectible
These angels are treasured heirlooms, given as gifts for baptisms, weddings, holidays, or simply as tokens of peace and beauty. Their presence on shelves and mantels has become a heartwarming tradition, especially during the Christmas season, when they bring music and magic to festive displays.
A Testament to German Craftsmanship
Wendt & Kühn continues to operate out of Grünhainichen, maintaining its small-scale, artisan approach. The legacy of the Grünhainichen Angels lives on — not only in the pieces themselves, but in the hands that still lovingly create them, just as Grete Wendt envisioned.
